About KCC Events
The Kingston Chess Club tries to offer a balanced schedule of casual and competitive events. We offer four formal events throughout the chess season: the Fall Classic, the President's Challenge, The KCC Club Championship and the Spring Open. All events feature the Swiss pairing system and are rated by the CXR. Individual games between players still rated by the CFC may agree to rate their game as a match (acccording to CFC rules) and pay the extra $3.00 per player per each such match. In between, we have been known to offer active and blitz events, special evenings such as a simultaneous display given by one of the country's best players, the occasional instructive lecture and of course evenings of casual chess.
Pairing system rules, prize funds and tournament rules are announced prior to the events. The Tournament Director (TD) has the responsibility and authority for running a competition that is both competitive and pleasantly sociable. The information appearing on this page is unofficial. We strive for accuracy but if in doubt, please consult with the event TD.

Rules:
1. All cell phones turned off. If a cell phone is left on and it rings the player automatically loses. Exceptions to this rule are at the discretion of the TD and will only be considered in unusual circumstances.
2. All players must write down their moves, this is not an option. If a player has less than 5 minutes left on his clock he may defer until his time runs out, at which point he must copy the moves off his opponents sheet. If both players have less than 5 minutes remaining the TD or another club member will keep track of the moves.
3. All talking is kept to a minimum. A certain amount of latitude is allowed, just remember what you consider whispering may not be viewed as such by other players. Be considerate of players still involved in their games.
4. We have a couple of players who are unable to get to the club before 7:45 pm. As a courtesy it has been agreed their opponents will not start the game clocks before 7:30pm. If you wish to give them more time you may do so.
5. If something happens and a player is not able to make his game, he and his opponent have the choice of playing their game at another time. The game must be played, and the results given to the TD by both players no later than the following Saturday. If a mutual date cannot be agreed to than the player who did not show up for th game defaults.
6. All requests for byes must be submitted to the TD no later than 8 pm on the Wednesday prior to the game. Any requests after that, refer back to rule #5.
7. All games begin promptly at 7:15 pm with the exception already stated in rule #4.
8. All questions or complaints during a game must be directed to the TD. The players will not have a discussion about the rules with each other.
9. All decisions made by the TD are final. If a player really believes the TD has made an incorrect decision the player will immediately inform the TD of this fact. At this point all games are put on hold a panel of other players knowledgeable with the rules of the game will be created. The panel will hear consider the complaint and the decision made by the TD, after which they will either agree with the player or TD. The decision made by the panel cannot be challenged by the player during the game. If the player still disagrees with the decision, the player must submit in writing his complaint to the Kingston Chess Club Executive.
10. Good sportsmanship is expected by all members within the Kingston Chess Club. Each player as a matter of good form should shake their opponents hand at the beginning and end of each game. Although players sometimes vent their frustrations, no swearing or belittling comments are tolerated.

THE GRAND AGGREGATE
Last year we had a discussion on creating a trophy to honour the chess player who, over a four tournament schedule, proved to be a "marathon" champion.
The trophy will be know as the "GRAND AGGREGATE".
A tropy with this kind of title will require a special kind of player. With that in mind, everybody brace themselves...........
The Winner of the GRAND AGGREGATE abhors getting points from requested byes, drawn games (seen as a disgrace / personal weakness and usually bordering on cowardice) and forfeitures.
The Winner of the GRAND AGGREGATE crushes any opponent who dares to presume to challenge him over the chess board.
The Winner of the Grand AGGREGATE'S moto is "JUST WIN BABY"!! His ideals are:
- 1. At the bell, toe the line (Be there for all challenges),
- 2. Be strong (Play aggressively)
- 3. Give no quarter ( win at all cost)
Therefore the Winner of the GRAND AGGREGATE will be allocated points in the following manner:
- 1 point for each win
- 1 point for a forced bye (not your fault if everybody runs away!)
- 4 points for winning a tournament. If there is a tie each player gets 2 points.
- loss of 1 point for a drawn game
- loss of 1 point for a requested bye
- loss of 2 points for a forfeit
Below are the GRAND AGGREGATE standings for the top 8 players with 5 or more points (after 3 tournaments):
| Standings | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | Total | ||
| KANDAN A | 4 | 9 | 3 | - | 16 | ||
| SIBBALD P | 0 | 0 | 10 | - | 10 | ||
| JORDAN H | 3 | 3 | 3 | - | 9 | ||
| LUKEZICH J | 3 | 4 | 1 | - | 8 | ||
| COPPIN W | 3 | 3 | 0 | - | 6 | ||
| ANJILVEL S | 1 | 0 | 4 | - | 5 | ||
| CHAN D | 3 | 1 | 1 | - | 5 | ||
| GORDON D | 2 | 1 | 2 | - | 5 | ||
As you can see by the above scores, winning THE GRAND AGGREGATE will not be easy! Be adventurous! Be bold! Be brave!! and most important of all...........have fun!!
Good luck to all. - Brian Murray, TD

The James Cairns Memorial Fall Swiss - 2011
Congratulations to co-champions Azroy Kandan and Jay Serdula who both finished with 5/6 in the first Dr James Cairns Memorial.
The event saw a number of late round forfeits which hopefully can be avoided in the future through better planning by the players.
Our next event, "The President's Challenge", starts next Monday November 14, leaving no time for our co-champions to rest on their laurels. It will be a 5 round event so please plan accordingly. All games start at 7:15 pm. Each player is allowed two 1/2 point byes. There are no points given for any byes taken in the last round. Games are 100 minutes sudden death. Good Sportsmanship towards your opponent is of course expected. - TD Brian Murray
